Brief synopsis -
It is the late 1930s in New York and famous scientists from around the world have mysteriously disappeared by an ‘evil futuristic force’. Chronicle reporter Polly Perkins (Gwenyth Paltrow), along with “old flame” and ace fighter pilot “Sky Captain” Joseph Sullivan (Jude Law), are on the case. Risking life and limb as they travel to exotic places around world, including remote parts of Nepal, can the fearless duo stop evil mastermind Dr. Totenkopf and his fiendish plot to destroy the Earth.

Sky Captain and his Flying Legion battle the bad guys in his Warhawk P-40, while the high seas are patrolled by his former ‘friend’ Captain Franky Cook (Angelina Jolie) and the mobile reconnaissance outpost she commands for the British Royal Navy, including an all-female amphibious squadron (what we British people know as Wren Marines), with the assistance of technical genius Dex (Giovanni Ribisi). Strange flying machines and looming giant walking robots soon begin to invade the city blocks of Manhattan and it is up to Sky Captain and his team to stop them in their tracks ...

Shot entirely against blue screen the film took ten years to develop, starting with director Kerry Conran writing his own software to make the film and the first four years him creating the first six minutes of film. He also said, ”The whole movie is a special effect, even a scene with two people sitting in a room. Really, it’s a live-action cartoon.”

It is described as a science fiction adventure set in the 1930s, akin to Indiana Jones (which incidentally is to have a new movie !), was renamed from “The World Of Tomorrow” on the 18th December 2003 and producer Aurelio De Laurentiis has already given Conran the go-ahead to begin work on two sequels.

Somewhat of a change from Variety’s original report whereby Angelina was an “accomplished aviatrix” and there was some confusion over whether it was Ribisi or Casey Affleck who was to take the part of techie Dex. Among many news articles you can read more in this article.
